History
This completely reconstructed residential Renaissance building was built in 1527. It is situated in a unique area – right in the heart of the historical centre or Prague – Lesser Town („Malá Strana“). After the great fire of Prague, which engulfed and destroyed almost all of the Lesser Town“, the building was reconstruted by the Mayor family. The Dutch painter Bartolomej Sprangler, who belong to the Rudolfine school of painting and who married into the Mayor family in 1570, decorated the facade of the house with beautiful frescos. Restored fragment of these frescos can still be admired today.
In 1617, Lorenc Maiderle of Mansperck, an imperial tax collector, bought the „Spangler“ building and two adjacent (neighbouring) buildings. In 1626, he connected these three houses into one building, which still exists till today. In 1645 the emperor Ferdinand III. gave his protection to the building, as a thanks for the fidelity during the war. No military was allowed to stay in any of the Mayor´s properties. The other imperial´s award was an exemption from taxation. To show this protection the Mayor family was allowed to hang a flag with the empire´s eagle and paint his ensignia on the building.
